Kicking-off the New Year, APCICT will welcome ASEAN students for a 2-month ICT for development learning experience, launch version 2.0 of the “Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders Programme”, and roll-out Academy Module 9 on the APCICT Virtual Academy.
APCICT to welcome ASEAN students for work exposure experience as part of the Turning Today’s Youth into Tomorrow’s Leaders Programme
The Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT/ESCAP), will begin the New Year by welcoming students from ASEAN countries to participate in the Centre’s “Turning Today’s Youth into Tomorrow’s Leaders” programme. On 09 January, 10 students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam will join APCICT as part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts to help turn today’s youth into tomorrow’s leaders.
In partnership with Daejeon University, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea, and the ASEAN University Network, APCICT will host the students for a 2-month work exposure experience designed to enhance awareness on the application of ICT for development (ICTD). While supporting APCICT’s mission to strengthen ICT human resource and institutional capacity building in the region, the students will have the opportunity to help organize upcoming training workshops, assist in the launch of new ICTD knowledge sharing publications, and help promote APCICT activities in ASEAN countries and beyond.
In particular, the ASEAN students will assist in the roll-out of APCICT’s most recent capacity development initiative, the Primer Series on ICTD for Youth, which is designed for use in institutions of higher learning to help equip students with the knowledge to leverage ICT for development.
APCICT has welcomed over 30 students from all ten ASEAN countries since 2008.
APCICT to roll-out updated version of flagship programme, the “Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders”
This month, APCICT will launch the “Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders” version 2.0. The Academy is APCICT’s flagship programme designed to equip government officials and policymakers with the skills and knowledge to effectively leverage ICT for socio-economic development. The Academy 2.0 is an updated version of the original Academy published in 2008, and includes the latest research and developments within the various topics of the Academy programme. Noting the tremendous pace of developments in the field of ICT, APCICT conducted a comprehensive review of the Academy modules and engaged original authors as well as additional thematic experts to build on the existing Academy content.
The original version of the Academy was launched on 16 June 2008, during the Global Forum for Building Inclusive Internet Economy during the OECD Ministerial Meeting, in the Republic of Korea. Since then, the Academy has been rolled-out in 22 countries across the Asia-Pacific region, and has engaged over 9,000 participants in face-to-face and online training.
APCICT to launch e-learning module on ICT for disaster risk management
Also this month, APCICT will launch Module 9 of the “Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders Programme”, on the Centre’s online, distance learning platform, the APCICT Virtual Academy. Module 9 examines the use of ICT in disaster risk reduction, and is designed to help government officials and development stakeholders use ICT in their local, national and regional disaster risk management frameworks. Module 9 of the Academy was first launched in October 2011, during APCICT’s Second Asia-Pacific Regional Forum on ICT Human Capacity Development.
The APCICT Virtual Academy was launched in June 2009, to facilitate and extend the reach of the Academy programme. All Academy modules and accompanying materials including case studies, presentation slides and reading lists are made freely available on the APCICT Virtual Academy. The Virtual Academy enables learners to take self-paced courses online. These courses are based on the Academy modules and incorporate virtual lectures and quick quizzes. Registered learners are rewarded with APCICT’s certificate of participation upon successful completion of courses. A DVD version of the Virtual Academy is available for those with no or limited Internet access. To date, there have been over 4,500 enrollments on the APCICT Virtual Academy.
