Incheon, Republic of Korea (UN ESCAP Information Services) – The Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT/ESCAP), a regional institute of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, today wrapped-up two events in Bali, Indonesia, designed to enhance information and communication technology (ICT) capacity for the purpose of advancing socio-economic development in the Asia-Pacific region.
The National Workshop of the “Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders Programme” (Academy) in Indonesia began on 30 November and included fifty Indonesian officials from government institutions and organizations. The workshop was organized by national Academy partners in the country, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) and the University of Indonesia, in support of APCICT. The National Workshop in Bali marks the sixth time APCICT, MCIT and the University of Indonesia have collaborated to deliver Academy training to policymakers and development stakeholders in Indonesia. The Academy programme was launched in Jakarta, Indonesia in March, 2009.
The Academy, a flagship programme of APCICT, provides a comprehensive curriculum on the fundamentals of leveraging ICTs to achieve development goals. During the workshop, participants were trained on the first three modules of the Academy: 1) The Linkage between ICT Applications and Meaningful Development; 2) ICT for Development Policy, Process and Governance; and 3) e-Government Applications.
The workshop training was delivered in Bahasa Indonesia. APCICT’s Indonesian Academy partners translated the entire curriculum - currently consisting of eight standalone, yet interlinked modules - into Bahasa Indonesia in 2009.
Bali, Indonesia also served as the site of the Fifth Session of the Governing Council of APCICT, which was organized to review the Centre’s work programme and achievements of the past year, and discuss APCICT’s ICT capacity development plans for 2011. The meeting began on 1 December and was attended by over twenty participants including the Governing Council’s representatives from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, the Republic of Korea and Thailand.
“APCICT would like to thank the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Republic of Indonesia, for hosting two productive events that have helped to strengthen ICT capacity in Indonesia and demonstrate the practical application of APCICT’s capacity development work in the Asia-Pacific region”, said Dr. Hyeun-Suk Rhee, Director of APCICT
Participants of both the Governing Council meeting and the National Workshop also participated in a fieldtrip to Denpasar City, to experience first-hand an e-Government project site in Indonesia.
The Academy programme has been delivered throughout Asia and the Pacific in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Indonesia, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Lao P.D.R., Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Samoa, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan and Viet Nam.
