Incheon, Republic of Korea - 24 Aug 2010

United Nations interns from the United States and the Republic of Korea, along with students from eight ASEAN countries, today concluded a two-to-three month work exposure programme at the Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT/ESCAP), in Incheon, Republic of Korea.

Participants of the programme conducted research on ICT for development topics and assisted APCICT in its efforts to strengthen ICT human resource capacity for socio-economic development in the Asia-Pacific region.  Participants were also provided with the opportunity to take part in a cultural presentation on traditional Korean costumes and attend a training workshop organized by APCICT and other regional development organizations.

Dr. Hyeun-Suk Rhee, Director of APCICT, thanked the interns and students for their hard work and presented each of them with a certificate acknowledging their participation in the programme and contribution to the mission of APCICT.

The two UN interns will return to the United States to complete their graduate studies, while the nine students from ASEAN countries will return to Daejeon in the Republic of Korea to complete their exchange programme at Daejeon University.

APCICT’s work-exposure programme for students supports the objectives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)-led ‘Decade of Education for Sustainable Development’ (DESD) initiative, which aims to incorporate the principles, values and practices of sustainable development in the approach to education.   APCICT’s programme also coincides with the International Year of Youth (IYY), recently kick-off by the United Nations which encourages youth to dedicate themselves to fostering progress and achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
