Over 120 government officials, trainers and educators gather in Almaty for a series of United Nations led events aiming to enhance information and communication technology for development (ICTD) capacity in Kazakhstan and the Central Asia subregion
On 05-08 June, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific’s (UNESCAP) regional ICT human capacity development hub, the Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT/ESCAP), and its Subregional Office for North and Central Asia (ESCAP/SONCA) are partnering to co-organize a subregional training of trainers workshop on ICT for disaster risk management and climate change abatement.
APCICT and SONCA, with the support of the Central Asian Research and Education Network (CAREN) will welcome more than 20 trainers from national civil service training institutes and representatives from Ministries and agencies responsible for disaster risk management and environmental matters from the subregion.
“This workshop is the culmination of APCICT’s ongoing work with numerous partners in the subregion to develop, implement and deliver capacity building trainings that serve specific local contexts,” stated Dr. Hyeun-Suk Rhee, Director of APCICT.
The workshop will deliver training on APCICT’s flagship "Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders Programme" (Academy), which aims to develop the skills and knowledge of government officials to leverage ICT for development. Training on Module 9 - ICT for Disaster Risk Management and Module 10 - ICT, Climate Change and Green Growth will be delivered in English and Russian. APCICT has worked with CAREN and other partners in the subregion to localize Academy curricula to better meet Central Asia’s capacity development needs.

On 05-07, APCICT will also co-organize the launch of a programme aimed at strengthening the ICTD capacity of youth in Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries. In partnership with the Kazakh British Technical University (KBTU), and with support from SONCA, APCICT will welcome 35 over national resources persons and academics from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan for training on APCICT's newly developed 'Primer Series on ICTD for Youth' (Primer Series).
The Primer Series, part of APCICT's flagship "Turning Today's Youth into Tomorrow's Leaders"programme, is designed to strengthen ICTD education for youth in institutions of higher-learning. Workshop participants will receive training on Primer 1: An Introduction to ICT for Development, which professors and trainers can utilize to help develop ICT skills and awareness in the subregion's next generation of leaders.

The Primer Series was officially launched at the national-level in Azerbaijan in February, 2012.
