ICT Capacity Building for Women in the APEC Region (7-18 September)
The United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT) is supporting the design and delivery of the IT Capacity Building Programme for Women in the APEC Region, in Seoul, Republic of Korea on 7-18 September 2009. This is an annual training programme organized by the Korean Ministry of Gender Equality (MOGE). This year 22 women policymakers from 12 APEC economies will participate in the programme.
The programme is not only focused on women as users of the digital technologies, but also as decision makers in their design and roll out. The programme is comprised of training sessions that examine gender sensitive policy and women's leadership, as well as ICT-related issues on e-government and information security, among many other topics. Selected training materials from APCICT’s flagship initiative – the “Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders” (Academy) – that focus on ways in which ICTs can be leveraged for women’s empowerment and the promotion of gender equality will be used for this training programme.
APCICT will be engaging the original author of Academy Module 7 on ICT Project Management in Theory and Practice to deliver a one-day face-to-face training on gender sensitive ICT project management. The training session will involve participants in a group exercise to develop gender sensitive project proposals. These proposals will be presented at a video conference with resource persons where participants will receive feedback and be coached on ways to mainstream gender issues in ICT project management.
Launch of the Russian Academy (30 September – 2 October)
To mark the commencement of a series of ICT trainings for policymakers in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and other Russian-speaking countries, an official launch event will be held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 30 September – 2 October 2009. These ICT trainings are part of the global Academy roll-out. Eight core modules of the Academy curriculum on information and communication technology (ICT) for development for policymakers have been translated into Russian by the National Information Technology Center (NITC) of Kyrgyzstan.
This launch event is co-organized by APCICT and the Central Asian Research and Education Network (CAREN), and hosted by the Tajik Research and Educational Network Association (TARENA). Fifty to sixty participants are expected at the launch, including high-level officials from the CIS, several diplomatic missions such as the Russian and Korean Embassies, UN agencies in Tajikistan, the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development, the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia, and the Europe Aid Cooperation Office.
The launch event will be followed by an inaugural Academy training workshop. This workshop will be led by Russian-speaking resource persons who have undergone APCICT’s training of trainers programme. Additionally, on 5-7 October 2009, the first national Academy workshop in Kyrgyzstan will be conducted by NITC. Both training workshops will focus on Modules 1 and 2 of the Academy that examine the linkages between ICT and the Millennium Development Goals, and ICT policy and governance, respectively.
