Eighth Session of APCICT’s Governing Council convened in Incheon, Republic of Korea on 12 December 2013

The United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT) organized the 8th Session of its Governing Council in Incheon, Republic of Korea on 12 December 2013 to review the progress and accomplishments of the Centre.

Incheon, Republic of Korea - On 12 December 2013, the United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT) organized the 8th Session of its Governing Council in Incheon, Republic of Korea. The 8thSession brought together the Governing Council’s 9 members from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Republic of Korea to review the progress and accomplishments of the Centre as well as its administrative and financial status since the last Council meeting in 2012. The meeting also provided an opportunity for Council members to chart the next steps on the path to APCICT’s mission of building the human and institutional capacities in the Asia-Pacific region on ICT for development.

Recognizing the reach and impact of APCICT’s different ICTD training programmes, research activities and advisory services, Members of the Governing Council, elected for the period 2012-2015, expressed their high expectations for the Centre’s future plans.

“APCICT has been playing an important role in ICTD capacity building in the Asia-Pacific region and we are pleased to see that its efforts and achievements are being recognized not only in the region, but also around the world. We are looking forward to the opportunities that the future holds for the further improvement and expansion of the Centre and its activities,” stated Dr. Rajendra Kumar, Joint Secretary of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.

This year’s session coincided with the Second Partners Meeting of the “Primer Series on ICTD for Youth”, APCICT’s flagship programme that is designed to impart key knowledge on ICT for development to students and youth, which was held on 10-13 December 2013 in Incheon,

Republic of Korea as well.   

United Nations APCICT-ESCAP

The United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT/ESCAP) is a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, established with a membership identical to that of ESCAP and is located in Incheon, Republic of Korea. APCICT aims to strengthen the efforts of the member countries of ESCAP to use ICT in their socio-economic development through building human and institutional capacity for ICT.

In accordance with its statute, UN-APCICT has a Governing Council consisting of a representative nominated by the Government of the Republic of Korea and eight representatives of members and associate members of ESCAP elected by the Commission. In addition to the host country, the Republic of Korea, the elected members of the Governing Council include: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand for the period of 2012 to 2015.
