The use of social media websites such as Facebook has been rapidly expanding in Bhutan. With more than 80,000 people using social media in the country, it is increasingly important to strengthen Bhutan’s human capacity on the use of these technologies for the purposes of socio-economic development while addressing information security and privacy concerns.
On 26-27 June, UN-APCICT’s national partner, the Royal Institute of Management of Bhutan, organized a workshop for 29 mid-level civil servants and private sector employees in Thimpu, Bhutan to support the country’s efforts to build its human capacity on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for development. The workshop covered modules 6 and 11 of UN-APCICT’s Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders on information security and privacy and social media for development, respectively.
Through the workshop, participants acquired a better understanding on the ways social media can be used for sustainable socio-economic development and good governance. Sessions also raised awareness on the importance of formulating a clear social media policy for the successful utilization of these platforms for development purposes. They also highlighted the importance of considering the relation between social media and information security and privacy during policy formulation.
