Trainers of Central and West Asia Focus on ICT Essentials for Government Leaders

On 5-10 May 2008, 16 representatives of national ICT ministries and ICT training institutions from 8 countries in Central and Western Asia will gather in Incheon, Republic of Korea to participate in a sub-regional training of trainers workshop on ICT Essentials for Government Leaders.

As advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) affect all aspects of are lives, we are witnessing improvements in infrastructures, access to information, education and health services. What emerges from such diverse applications of ICT is the important role of government in taking stock of such initiatives, and providing national guidance and frameworks to enable the development of technologies that benefit all citizens in the long run.

On 5-10 May 2008, 16 representatives of national ICT ministries and ICT training institutions from 8 countries in Central and Western Asia will gather in Incheon, Republic of Korea to participate in a sub-regional training of trainers workshop on ICT Essentials for Government Leaders. Participating countries include: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Particpants of the workshop will be trained on:

  • ICT Trends for Government Leaders
  • Internet Governance
  • Network and Information Security and Privacy

This workshop is the second of three workshops being held during April and May 2008. The first workshop was held on 14-19 April 2008 in Hyderabad, India for South Asian trainers. The third workshop will be held on 21-24 May 2008 in Jakarta, Indonesia for South-East Asian trainers.

These sub-regional workshops are being held as part of the Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders, a flagship capacity building initiative of the United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology (UN-APCICT). It is comprised of eight modules ranging from basic to more advanced topics on ICT for development that aims to equip policy makers and other government officials with the essential knowledge and skills they need to fully leverage opportunities presented by ICTs to achieve national development goals and bridge the digital divide.

Feedback from participants on the usefulness and relevance of the training methodology and materials will be used to fine-tune the modules prior to the official launch of the Academy on 16 June 2008, on the occasion of UN-APCICT’s second anniversary.
